Glaze and paint with overglaze maiolica colors on pre-made stoneware tiles and saucers (or bring in your own bisqueware**) using opaque white glaze for a cone 6 firing with a rainbow of overglaze colors and a variety of brushes and tools.
Maiolica is a word that means low-fire white glaze with overglaze colors on terra cotta earthenware. This class is about maiolica-inspired work since we will be using mid-fire cone 6 stoneware, not low-fire terracotta earthenware)
Decorate your work in painterly techniques inspired by colorful and joyful maiolica. Learn the history of maiolica (also called faience or talavera) from Forma artist Kelly Newcomer, who studied maiolica in Faenza, Italy.
You will have an opportunity to decorate your work with paintings of animals, flowers, abstract shapes and lettering. Learn about how to work with this thick white glaze that doesn’t flow in the kiln. Use special Italian brushes made from cows hair with saber “sabatoio” tips. Learn centuries old pouncing technique with graphite to copy design from tracing paper with punched holes onto glazed surface of work.Participants may bring their own bisque ware to glaze and decorate as long they know it’s made with cone 6 mid fire clay.
**Bring up to 4 pieces no larger than 12 inches in any dimension, or we can provide you with test tiles/saucers.
